Referral spam are mainly "bots". These bots actually visit websites in order to send fake traffic (mainly fake referral traffic)
They create and send fake referrer headers to avoid being detected as bots. The fake referrer header contains the website URL which spammer wants to promote and/or build back links.
How do I stop referral spam?

Are you into buying and selling of domains? Well, at a domain buying/selling/etc forum that I belong too (Namepros.com) there is a very interesting thread titled ""emails from domainers selling crap names", as of this posting, that thread has received "39226 Views". Now this thread is basically about members sharing some of the emails that they receive from fellow domainers trying to sell their crappy (worthless)names for a fast buck!
Now lately, there has been mention of a fellow going by the name of "Ralf Hetzner". He has supposedly been sending the following emails out

So if you come across a email from a Ralf Hetzner offering to buy or sell you a domain...proceed with caution.. in my humble opinion.. Ignore and put the email in your spam folder!
